I saw Chicago at the Alexandra Theatre on the 8th March 2012, I previously saw it in a semi-professional show in August 2010 and enjoyed it so much that I was really looking forward to the West End show touring.
However, I don’t think it matched up. The acting was just as briliant, as was the singing, but the production seriously let it down. It isn’t possible to take a full set on tour but I’ve seen other touring shows with bigger sets. The stage seemed to be filled with the orchestra, leaving no room for anything else. Sometimes less is more, but this was not. They used little more than chairs, and seen as it is set in a jail, the bars of prison cells seem a must. There was also a distinct lack of police officers! It just seemed to have something lacking, it didn’t leave you on a high like the other performance I saw. But wow Bernie Nolan can sing!
