From my media diary, I chose to research the film ‘Fame’ which I saw on the Wednesday evening. I found out that it was produced by three companies; United Artists, Lakeshore Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The film was a major motionpicture. http://www.generationfame.com/
http://www.unitedartists.com United Artists have been the distributers for 1,969 films since 1919 to the present day, celebrating their 90th anniversary. The films they have distributed were on the whole independent films. They have also been the producers on many blockbuster and Hollywood films such as Casino Royale and Die Another Day. However, they have also produced independent films too. In total they are listed as having produced 104 motionpictures. It was founded 5/2/1919 by Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and DW Griffith. Several companies hold shares within UA, they are; Providence Equity Partners (29%), TGP Capital LP (21%), Sony (20%), Comcast (20%), DLJ Merchant Banking, Partners (7%) and Quadrangle Group (3%). The parent companies are; Independent Company, Transamerica and MGM. UA is in the film and music industry and makes solely motionpictures. They produced and distribute films. Tom Cruise owns a share in the studios.

LE has produced 53 films, many winning Academy Awards. LE has also distributed 22 films; on the whole independent. The current company president is Gary Lucchesi. LE also owns a record company- Lakeshore Records. LE and LR produce motion pictures and records.
http://www.mgm.com/ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has been producing and distributing film and television programmes since 16/4/1924. It produced and distributes just motionpictures and televsion programmes, both independent and major. The current chairman is Harry Sloan and it’s parent company is MGM Holdings Inc. Sony Corporation of America, Comcast, Providence Equity Partners, TPG Capital, DLJ Merchant Banking Parterners and Quandrangle Group all own shares in MGM. MGM has a turnover of approx. $500million from film and television. MGM has distributed 3,976 films and produced 2,978 films.
